Inventor of the car
Inventor of the car may be riddle but the answer for inventor of gasoline cars has been widely recognized as Karl Benz. He unveiled Motorwagen in 1886 and this car generally known as the first patent gasoline or petrol powered car. The definition of a car is a wheeled vehicle either 3 wheels or 4 wheels with its own motor and self-propelled. There are quite a number of history record show cars has been invented before Karl Benz but most of these cars are powered by steam and some inventors did not build the car successfully. Let’s travel back to the past and check out the history!
Cars or automobile is one of the most revolutionary inventions in the history and our life today. A car with 4 wheels is more common even though there are cars with 4 wheels and also 3 wheel cars. This is because a 4 wheeled car is more stable on the ground and better performance.
Let’s start the journey back in 1672, a Flemish Jesuit missionary Father Ferdinand Verbiest claims to be the first inventor who ever built the first self-propelled vehicle powered by steam. It is said that Father Ferdinand Verbiest built the first car in China as he was in China during the Qing dynasty and this car is to build for the Chinese Emperor “Chien Lung”. However, this small size car is not recognized as first car invented due to lack of evidence and proof. This claim-to-be first car is called the Verbiest’s car.
Here we move on to 1769, the first self-propelled vehicle which is a military tractor for the French army was invented by Nicholas-Joseph Cugnot in France. The vehicle is a three wheel car that able to produce 2.5 mph.
In 1789, Oliver Evans built a steam-powered car and patented it as the first U.S. car. Oliver Evans was an American inventor who designed a machine making card teeth for carding wool back in 1777. Isn’t it wonderful?
In 1801, a British inventor and mining engineer Richard Trevithick built the first steam-powered car in Great Britain. This great British inventor has also built the first full-scale working railway steam locomotive.
In 1806, Francois Isaac de Rivaz who was a Swiss inventor constructed the first successful internal combustion engine. This engine was powered by a mixture of hydrogen and oxygen. A year later in 1807, he placed this engine to a vehicle and invented the first automobile or car. Unfortunately, this was never commercialized but it was widely known as on of the car inventor.
In 1823, an English engineer and inventor Samuel Brown developed one of the earliest internal combustion engines in London. Once again it did not recognized due to lack of evidence.
During 1832 to 1839, Robert Anderson brought up another great revolution in automobile world. He was the first person invented the crude electric carriage and car among all inventor of the car.
In 1873, a Frenchman Amedee Bollee invented and built the first steam vehicle named “L’Obeissante” (The Obedient) and it made the first road trip between Le Mans and Paris in 18 hours. L’Obeissante carried 12 passengers and cruising at the speed of 19 mph (30 km/h). It was a rear wheel drive car powered by 2 V-twin steam engines which can hit the top speed to 25 mph (40 km/h). May be this is where the V-12 engine today come from?
In 1881, another great French inventor Gustave Trouvé designed and invented first electric-powered car and demonstrated the car at International Exhibition of Electricity in Paris.
During 1885 and 1886, it is the most recognized year and people, Karl Benz. The story is everywhere and you can find it at “who invented the car”.
In 1886, Gottlieb Wilhelm Daimler and Wilhelm Maybach invented the first four wheeled car powered by a four-stroke gasoline engine. This car is known as the “Cannstatt-Daimler”. Gottlieb Daimler and his lifelong business partner Wilhelm Maybaack were 2 great German inventors who also fitted their petrol engine to the first motorcycle, stagecoach (a type of 4-wheeled closed coach for passengers and goods), and also boat.
Who invented the car?
There are more stories after what had happened in 1886. In 1895, a U.S. inventor George Selden granted a U.S. patent for his automobile.
In 1893, another U.S manufacturer of motor vehicles Charles Edgar Duryea and his brother Frank Duryea invented and built one of the first gasoline fueled automobiles. They then established their company Duryea Motor Wagon Company in 1895 and known as one of the first American firms to build gasoline car.
Last few centuries unlike our modern day today, people do not connected so well as they do not have internet, the press is very slow and can’t reach the public so fast when one person had invented a car. Therefore it may have few person invented the same thing at the same time in different places at any corner in the world. For more detail information, check out who invented the first car.
Everyone who participates in car inventing did a great job and contributes to the automobile industry until what we have today no matter it is to challenge the speed of a horse, speed of a buggy, or challenge the technology. What I would to say is, all the man listed above is really looking handsome and smart. We should appreciate every inventor of the car.
