Karl Benz on his car
Who invented the first car? The first car invented and built in 1885 and unveiled in 1886 by Karl Benz. The first car, Benz Patent Motorwagen, is the first car ever made in history powered by gasoline with an engine motorized by an internal combustion. Before 1885, there are some steam powered and electric powered car invented by Nicolas-Joseph Cugnot and Robert Anderson, but Karl Benz’s invention is widely recognize as the first car or the first automobile in the history, which is, a vehicle designed to be propelled by a motor and powered by gasoline.

Benz Patent Motorwagen was awarded the German DRP No. 37435 on January 29, 1886. It seems like a far history from our automobile world today but the first car has reflect to approximately over 100,000 patents of modern car created today including antique cars, classic cars, muscle cars as well as some of the super exotic sports cars.

Design of the car

The Motorwagen was only a three-wheeled car, 1 smaller wheel in front and 2 bigger wheels at the back, with a very classic car seat made by wood and only capable for maximum of 2 people, 1 driver, and 1 passenger. A very small steering wheel that you will find it funny but it able to control the car well. Overall, the first car invented look quite elegant. As the technology we had more than a century ago is limited.

Engine of the car

The engine is not as basic as you think. The first Motorwagen used the Benz 954 cc single-cylinder four-stroke engine which produced roughly 0.6 hp at 250 rpm. With this engine, the car accessed 11.81 mph (19 kmh) in 1886 and it had become one of the world fastest production car as well as first street legal car. Do not laugh, there are still some cars in the market today having the engine produce less than 900 cc.
