Mini in Malaysia at 50
KEEPING things simple does wonders almost all the time. Living proof of this concept of simplicity is found in the iconic British automotive brand, the Mini, which many describe as an automotive wonder of the world.
The first Mini to roll out of Cowley in England was on August 26, 1959. The Mini was brought to our shores in Malaysia as early as 1961 in CBU and CKD formats by Associated Motor Industries (AMI) Sdn Bhd and distributed across the nation by Wearnes Brothers Sdn Bhd.
Like in other parts of the world, this mighty tiny car created a feverish wave of enthusiasm then and more so now.
The Mini excelled in competition against bigger and faster cars akin to the small but ferocious breed in the canine world, the Pit Bull Terrier.
Even after 50 years of existence, it oozes appeal and remains one of the most popular cars of all time. All around the globe, Mini clubs and enthusiast groups celebrate the golden jubilee of the marquee this year.
Not wanting to miss out on this global euphoria, local event management company AMC Motors Asia (M) Sdn Bhd and Mini Owners Group Malaysia are jointly organizing a two-dayMini 50th anniversarycelebration next weekend (Aug 8 and 9) at Dataran Shah Alam in Shah Alam, Malaysia, with the support of the Selangor state government.
The weekend is expected to see a large gathering of Minis from Malaysia, Singapore, Indonesia and Thailand.
Also in store are Autokhana’s autojumble, Mini display booths and a host of fun games for the family.
