In 1852, James Alexander Holden immigrated to Australia from England and started saddlery business in Adelaide. Years later, he turned the business of making horse saddle to horse power, where he founded Holden in 1856.

In 1913, the company began to produce complete motorcycle sidecar bodies. During 1920s, Holden was specializing in making car body shells and it was one of the major car body suppliers for some famous car brand in Australia at that time including Ford, Chevrolet, and Dodge.
