Citroën, pronounce as “Ci-Tron” is one of the major French automaker as well as one of the oldest automobile manufacturer in France. It was founded in 1919 by André-Gustave Citroën.

The name “Citroën” was named after the founder’s family name. In 1924, Citroën was the first automobile company in Europe to produce first all-steel-bodied car, the Citroën B-10. Few years later in 1934, we saw the birth of Citroën Traction Avant, one of the most wanted Citroën cars since 1930s until today.

During 1950s to 1960s, Citroën brought few contributions to automobile industry such as the Citroën DS, the first European car that fitted with disc brakes in 1955.

In 1976, Peugeot SA purchased part of Citroën SA and both companies combined into a holding company known as PSA Peugeot Citroën. PSA proved to the world that the combination is a success. In 2009, PSA was ranked number 6 as biggest car manufacturer in the world according to car manufacturer statistic.

Citroën Cars History and Significant Models

  • Citroën DS (1955 – 1975) – With nearly 1.5 million Citroën DS were sold, the car is recognized as the world’s most influential auto designs as well as most beautiful car of all time by Classic & Sports Car magazine.
  • Citroën DS3 (2009 – present) – A cool supermini car from Citroën.
  • Citroën 2CV (1948 – 1990) – In French we called it “deux chevaux” which literally means two tax horsepower. The Citroën CV was an economy car that gives people a great transport while facing the oil crisis after World War. The design and the performance has made the car appeared not only in automobile magazine but also fashion related magazine.
  • Citroën SM (1970 – 1975) – The Citroën SM is one of the best high performance Citroën cars during the 1970s. It is fitted with a 3.0 L V6 engine which is pretty impressive at that time.
  • Citroën C2 (2003 – 2009)
  • Citroën C5 (2001 – present)
  • Citroën Berlingo (1996 – present) – Citroën Berlingo is good for those who wants a big space for leisure activities.

  • Citroën Traction Avant (1934 – 1957) – Citroën Traction Avant is a very popular cars because it was the first mass-produced front-wheel drive car and also one of the first few cars to feature monocoque-type body.

Citroën concept cars include the Citroën C-Cactus and Citroën GT (GT by Citroën or sometimes spelled GTbyCitroën). Citroën GT is a very cool car with futuristic look.
